There is no reason why you can't prepay for years in advance. With my webhost, I have an arrangement where my domain names are automatically renewed every year until I cancel. Since I pay for the site space, I am not even charged for the domain name, so I save the $10 annual fee. My web host is alsonetworks.com and I have been with them for 5 to 6 years.

I dont think this is possible...(unless you are someone very close to a domain registrar like a family member.. lol just kidding) this is how the domain registrar's make money..domain brokers make money...even purchasing your own server is not going to help.... you need to register with registrar anyway.. so that is going to cost.. :-)..Even Microsoft has to register from time to time..

When you register a domain name, in your name, you OWN IT! You own it for as long as you pay to own it. You can reg. up to 10 years, OR you can do what most do, and that is have your name registered with a credible ICANN-accredited registrar and have it renew automatically every year. If you want to sell your name, or just do not want it anymore, the latter approach is the best, since you do not loose 10 years worth of registration $. Think of domain name registrars as tax collectors. Even though you OWN your home outright, you still must pay taxes on it, or risk loosing it.
