When I did web hosting I found my Domain name in different company ? What is the different between them, why not both in one company? Do I have to know what company my domain are? and what Unlock ? Private public? Auth code?Thanks

Need to learn about domain name registration?
I want to sign up for a domain name. I know how to run a website make layout, code them, etc. I've had a couple very popular ones in the past. Now I want to dedicate myself to a new website and I want to sign up for a domain name. Does this cost money? If so, how does it all work? making and coding pages, etc. I usually use freewebs when starting up. Does it work the same way as that basically except with a .com .net name? Please tell me everything I need to know.Btw what is the difference between the .com, .net names? I know the difference between like .tv or .biz but which one is the best to go with?
Domain name registration - what is redemption period? and when does it begin and end??
I allowed our ISP provider to register our domain name but I recently found out he was overcharging me so I didn't renew my registration with him anymore but the problem is I cannot register my domain with other registration site. It says " domain status redemption period" what does this mean? when did it begin and more importantly when will it end?? The expiration of the registration was last Dec.2007 but up to now the domain name cannot be registered renewed why? My former ISP provider refuses to tell me the answer why I can't register my domain with others. I suspect they are blackmailing me so I would renew my registration with them. What should I do?
