What is the difference between high speed internet access and wirelesss access?

Just bought my first house. How do I get high speed internet access?
Okay, this is a pathetic question because I should know this by now. But, I've always used the internet on college campus, or at work, or lived with someone who already had the internet. So, now I bought my first house and of course I want the internet on my computer and I have no idea how to go about it. My computer is a Dell 8300 desktop. I've been asking around and I have decided to go with AT& T through my home phone landline. I currently don't use a home phone, I use my cell phone as my home phone. I know that there's a landline ready to be used with a phone jack near my computer. When I call AT& T, they'll probably try to sell me more than I need. All I want is highspeed internet access and be able to download minor things, like music and pictures. What specifically do I need for my computer to receive high speed internet? Is there more that I need besides my computer and a phone line connecting it? Any advice would be appreciated. Here is the AT& T website I'm looking at att.com gen general?pid 6431 I'm asking this from my work computer on my lunch break. I would prefer not to get cable.

High speed internet access for under $15?

I live in an rural area without high speed Internet access. Can I remotely access a computer with hs access?
I live rural. Can I put a computer online in an area with high speed access, get a static ip address, and use one of the remote access programs to access the high speed computer, and have the data come back to me high speed. Other than satellite, is there any other way to get hs access. ISDN is quite expensive, so probably not viable. As an aside, how do I determine where the central office providing me telephone service is located? The first question is the most important to find an answer for. Thanks, Dick
