Get a news program (I prefer Forte's Agent, but it's not free - there are free ones, and Thunderbird sort of does news.) Set it up (get the server address from your provider). Download the list of groups from your provider. Subscribe to one or more groups. Read a group for at least a few days to get the temper of the group - some are all friendly, some will chew a newbie up. Post as and when you're comfortable.
